1. Second-Hand Wins: Look Good, Feel Even Better
The planet’s hottest trend? Pre-loved fashion.
Shopping second-hand is a win for your wardrobe, your wallet, and the planet. When you buy used, you’re keeping clothes out of landfills, conserving resources, and supporting the circular economy. Plus, you get the thrill of discovering one-of-a-kind gems that no one else will have.
Impact that hits home:
If every person bought just one used item this year, we’d save mind-blowing 4 billion kWh of energy.
> That’s enough to power the Empire State Building for 72 years.
> Or light up the Eiffel Tower for 512 years straight.
Before buying new, challenge yourself to search for a pre-loved version first. You’ll be surprised at what you find. Whether it’s charity shops, thrift stores, or apps like Vinted and Depop, there’s a treasure trove out there just waiting to be explored.
2. The Power of Three: Reduce, Reuse, (Then) Recycle
The waste-free hierarchy you actually need to know.
1. Reduce: The greenest product is the one you don’t buy.
2. Reuse: Swap disposable for durable (think water bottles, bags, and coffee cups).
3. Recycle: When all else fails, recycle responsibly.
Why it matters:
1. Reducing what we use = making less = less CO2 in the atmosphere.
2. Reusing saves precious resources like water, energy, and raw materials.
3. Recycling keeps waste out of landfills and oceans.
Do a “waste audit” at home. Track the items you throw away most often (like coffee cups or food containers) and swap them out for reusable alternatives. It’s a small change that can have a big impact!
3. Shop Local Until You Drop (Or Save the Planet)
The all-in-one way to help the planet, your local economy and yourself.
Shopping locally isn’t just about getting fresh, quality products—it’s a powerful way to reduce your carbon footprint. When you buy local, your goods travel shorter distances, which means fewer CO2 emissions. Many local producers also follow sustainable practices, supporting both the planet and the economy.
Think local equals expensive? Not always!
Local doesn’t always have to mean pricey. With a bit of savvy, you can find incredible deals by chatting with producers about promotions, bundle deals, or discounts.
Find your nearest farmers’ market for fresh produce and fantastic deals. You might even get a goodie bag with free or discounted produce that’s near its use-by date — score!
4. Time to Go Green
Embrace the ebb and flow of nature.
Going green is all about introducing plants and flowers into your space. Swap the paved-over look for a vibrant, colourful garden that looks great and benefits the environment. Plants improve air quality, help lower stress, and can even lift your mood.
And don’t forget the bees!
Greening up your garden isn’t just good for you—it’s good for the planet. A greener garden helps bees thrive, which gives a good boost to biodiversity.
Opt for bee-friendly plants (yes, they prefer certain flowers!). A garden that attracts bees helps support the wider environment and contributes to a healthier planet for everyone.
5. Ditch the Drive: Step, Pedal, Ride
Do you really need the car?
Cars produce over 70% more CO2 than public transport like trains. Truthfully, most car journeys could easily be swapped for a walk, a bike ride, or a quick trip on public transport. These options are better for the planet and you.
Get In Those 10k Steps:
We’re told to aim for about 5 miles a day—so why not get fit and reduce your impact while you’re at it? Two birds, one walk.
Public transport is more affordable than you think. Check sites like Trainline or Split My Fare for deals that save you money and cut down your CO2 emissions. You can even track your CO2 savings on any booking with the Trainline for a feel-good boost!
6. Greener Grub
Cattle farming: the ultimate climate culprit!
Our diets have a huge impact on the environment. One of the worst culprits is cattle farming, making up roughly 18% of all carbon emissions.
The resources required to produce beef are staggering:
> A single cow requires as much space as it takes to grow over 1 tonne of grain.
> Beef production uses 8 times more freshwater than crops like wheat or rice and 50 times more than plant-bases alternatives.
Safe to say, meat isn’t exactly the planet’s BFF. So, what’s the solution?
You don’t have to go completely vegan, but swapping just one meaty meal for a plant-based plate each week can save over 100kg of CO2 a year. If we all follow suit, that’s a profound difference!
You don’t have to sacrifice flavour to eat more sustainably. There are so many delicious plant-based recipes out there, from hearty bean stews to meat-alternatives – the world’s your oyster!
7. Energy Savvy
Saving the planet? It’s as easy as flipping a switch.
Here’s a fun fact: leaving a light on overnight for 2 years creates as much CO2 as driving from Edinburgh to Paris. Wild, right? And in offices, 40% of energy bills go to lighting—imagine the savings from just one flick of a switch!
But it’s not just about lights—other everyday appliances like electronics on standby, ceiling fans running unnecessarily, and radiators cranked up full blast also eat up energy.
Small habits, big difference:
Switching off lights when you leave a room, unplugging devices when they’re not in use, and turning off fans and radiators can all add up to massive energy savings—and a cleaner planet.
Invest in smart bulbs! These handy gadgets let you control your lighting from your phone, no matter where you are. So you can save energy with the touch of a button.
8. Skip the Single-Use Plastics
Nothing is truly “single-use”—it all ends up somewhere.
C’mon, we know where it goes: landfills and our oceans. In fact, over 11 million tonnes of single-use plastic is predicted to end up in our oceans. The worst part? Much of it is completely unnecessary, used for just a few minutes before being discarded.
So, it’s time to ditch the disposables and embrace reusables!
Need a refill? Look for shops that let you top up jars or bottles with everything from grains to cleaning products. Sustainable and stylish!
9. Put your Money to Work
Supporting climate causes doesn’t just benefit the planet—it feels amazing knowing your money is driving real change. Find a cause that resonates with you and start making an impact today. Your money can help shape a sustainable future for Scotland—and for the planet!

10. Consumer Conscious, Climate Conscious
Stop being habitual, start being critical
We’re using up resources 1.7 times faster than the planet can replenish. At this rate, we’ll need a whole other planet just to keep up!
Overconsumption not only pumps out CO2 (from mining, farming, and harvesting) but also cuts down the planet’s ability to absorb it (hello, deforestation).
But here’s the thing: we have the power to change. By consuming more mindfully, slowing down the rate of our resource use, and reducing waste, we can lower emissions and give the planet a chance to recover.
And remember, every little change counts.
